Morrison&#8217;s tenure will start in early November taking over from Tinna Gu\u00f0mundsd\u00f3ttir, who has been Skaftfell&#8217;s Director since 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skaftfell&#8217;s Board is pleased to welcome Gavin Morrison as the Director of Skaftfell. We believe it will be valuable to the organisation to have a person with such extensive knowledge of the art environment. In addition to Gavin\u00b4s extensive international experience in the field of curating, Gavin has worked closely with an array of Icelandic artist. At Skaftfel\u00b4s twentieth anniversary the board believes that it is important for Skaftfell to strengthen and expand its international relations.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Au\u00f0ur<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u00f6rundsd\u00f3ttir, Chairperson of Skaftfell&#8217;s Board<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morrison has a long-standing relationship with Iceland, and Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in particular. From \u00a02015-2016, he served as Honorary Artistic Director at Skaftfell where he was responsible for the exhibitions <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eyborg Gu\u00f0mundsd\u00f3ttir &amp; \u00a0Eygl\u00f3 Har\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir; Ing\u00f3lfur Arnarsson &amp; \u00deur\u00ed\u00f0ur R\u00f3s Sigur\u00fe\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir; Unoriginal: copying, duplication and plagiarism in art and design; and solo projects by Hanna Krist\u00edn Birgisd\u00f3ttir and Sigur\u00f0ur Atli Sigur\u00f0sson, among others. Throughout<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his career, Morrison has held positions at and collaborated with various institutions around the world including Kungl. Konsth\u00f6gskolan, Stockholm; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Osaka Contemporary Art Center, Japan; and University of Edinburgh, Scotland. A native of Scotland, for several years, Morrison has resided in the south of France.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have long admired the various roles that Skaftfell plays within the life of Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur as a cultural, social and educational hub for the local community and visitors to the area,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Gavin Morrison<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIts engagement with the complexities of international culture in relation to the specifics of local conditions is a fascinating model. In the role of Director, I plan to continue this tradition and create a dynamic program that grows in international significance but remains rooted in the local context.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skaftfell was established in Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in 1998. It is primarily based in a three-floor traditional wood building in the center of the town that includes the gallery, residency facilities and bistro, in addition Skaftfell also manages <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geirah\u00fas, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the former home of naive artist \u00c1sgeir J\u00f3n Emilsson, as well as the sound-sculpture <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tvis\u00f6ngur<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by German artist Lukas K\u00fchne. The center&#8217;s programming spans across contemporary and historical work, with attention to the cultural conditions in which it is made. Skaftfell&#8217;s activities take the form of exhibitions and events, alongside a residency and education program. Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur is a port town in the east of Iceland where the ferry from Denmark and the Faroe Islands arrives.
