During her six-week residency from October 15 to November 30, El Ansari will work on her project \u2018Dreams in Exile\u2019 culminating in an exhibition in the Skaftfell Gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In <i>Dreams in Exile<\/i>,\u00a0the Egyptian artist Nermine El Ansari explores ways to give\u00a0new forms of visual expression\u00a0to ideas of\u00a0displacement and exile. It looks at the\u00a0emotional labyrinth\u00a0experienced by\u00a0foreigners\u00a0living in faraway lands to seek a deeper understanding of isolation and the eternal search for a place\u00a0to truly belong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The\u00a0project is inspired by El Ansari\u00b4s personal experiences going through multiple relocations since childhood. Inspiration is also drawn from those asylum seekers\u00a0who sought refuge in Iceland, whose stories she has borne\u00a0witness to\u00a0since 2015,\u00a0as an interpreter at both an LGBTQ organization in Reykjavik and at the\u00a0government\u00a0immigration office. The\u00a0asylum seekers\u2018\u00a0stories echo throughout her\u00a0work: the intense rupture brought about by separating from one\u2018s homeland, and the memories\u2014set against a new, unfamiliar land\u2014of home: the places, language, scents, sounds, weather, and voices that occupy the mind when longing for home.\u00a0The\u00a0feeling\u00a0of isolation and the complexities of yearning for a place to belong,\u00a0serve as a reminder that displacement is a universal human experience that transcends borders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Amidst this sea of\u00a0loss\u00a0and\u00a0longing,\u00a0dreams emerge as a beacon of hope. Dreams, like ethereal landscapes,\u00a0have\u00a0no boundaries.
